Bich Tuyen is not the answer: Vietnam women's volleyball is wasting a golden generation on a height obsession

"People say I shock. I just name what they are too polite to say." For 36 years I have watched volleyball from Brazil to Southeast Asia, and now, before Vietnam women's volleyball, I see a golden generation being wasted on a height obsession. Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen is a rare gem. Her 3.14m reach, powerful wrist, and strong blocking ability make her the region's best opposite hitter. But after decades of watching Thailand and Japan rise, I have learned that one big star does not create a foundation. Vietnam keeps losing to Thailand in the finals not because of a lack of talent, but because the system does not serve the spiker. The perfect-pass rate falls in critical sets; setters are not developed; jumbo spikers have never left for the Japanese league; the whole league is built around foreign attackers or a couple of superstars. I am not saying height is meaningless. But modern volleyball volleyball is about synchrony and first-touch defense. Thailand wins not by jumping higher, but by high %, by smart setter choices, by cover. Vietnam must invest in young setters, liberos, and court awareness. If Bich Tuyen and a new generation are surrounded by a real system, SEA Games gold is possible. If not, history will repeat again. I am ready to be wrong—and that would be the happiest thing for Vietnamese volleyball.
