According to a report from Table Tennis England, the Isle of Wight Table Tennis Association closed its previous season with a Presentation Evening on September 4. Division One player Mike Turner presented trophies to winners and runners-up across league and tournament competitions. Chairman Alex Rorke thanked Pat Thorley, Paul Cates, Tim Giles and Peter Clarke for organising the event. The routine annual ceremony would be easy to skim, but the details point toward the upcoming season. The new Winter League begins in early October with four divisions. The most notable detail is that 16 players are aged under 16. This number is small by metropolitan standards, yet it gives the island association a visible junior cohort. Table Tennis England described this as a positive sign for the future. I agree with caution: the number only counts registration, not retention. A four-division league suggests enough players across different skill levels to make competition sustainable. It also gives newer players a chance to win matches instead of facing experienced players every week. For a small island association, this structure matters as much as individual trophies. The real question about the 16 young players is not whether they signed up, but whether they stay through the season and return the following year. Grassroots development is measured over time. Croatia in 2026 was not magic but the sum of overlooked passes. On a smaller scale, a structured local league and a group of teenagers are those overlooked passes. At the end of the season, Isle of Wight will send a team of eight players to the International Island Games in the Faroe Islands. The trip gives local players international experience, but its true value will appear in later Winter League seasons. I will not turn the 16 under-16 players into a promise. I will watch whether they keep playing after the first few rounds. Patience is an easy algorithm to write but a hard one to run.
